Read Stone's reponse to this, as well as letters to the History Channel from: |
FAX from Jean Horton Garner, Senior VP and Co-Producer of the History
Channel special based on Patricia Lambert's
book False Witness, to Oliver Stone.
August 2, 2000 Dear Mr. Stone: You may be aware that in March 1999 the book False Witness: The Real Story of Jim Garrison's Investigation and Oliver Stone's Film JFK was published by M. Evans & Co. Thoroughly researched and annotated by writer Patricia Lambert, the book is being adapted to a 2-hour documentary special for The History Channel by our company. Ms. Lambert is the co-producer and writer, with Barry Nye as the Supervising Producer and Editor. We have interviewed over 20 individuals who were involved in the trial or knew some of the colorful characters in this real life drama, as well as experts and historians. We are attempting to tell what actually occurred in New Orleans during Jim Garrison's investigation. For, as you have pointed out, your film JFK was made as a myth to counter the Warren Report, not as an accurate rendering of the facts. Yet most of the viewing public believes JFK to be the gospel truth. We would like to provide you with the opportunity to be interviewed for our documentary. The questions we would like to ask would concern the impact of the film, the techniques you employed, and the controversy surrounding it. We would also like to ask at least one question about a specific scene. Because we just received notice from The History Channel that what was originally to be a one-hour special has now been extended to two hours, we have a very limited amount of time to complete production prior to our delivery date in October. Thus, we have a short window in which to conduct the rest of the interviews. We can film the week of August 14th, either near our office in Ojai, or anywhere in the Los Angeles area that you would prefer. Our company received an Emmy award for our 2-hour special America Remembers JFK in 1983, and we have produced over 100 hours of programming in our 23 years as documentary producers and distributors. We look forward to hearing from you very soon. For more information on our company, visit our Web site at www.sharktv.com. We would be pleased to send you any additional information you may require. We sincerely hope you will be able to take a few minutes to share your views and insights into the production and impact of your film. Yours sincerely, Jean Horton Garner
