Dear Mr. Weinberg:

In late November and early December 2009, I watched two specials that your channel broadcast concerning the assassination of President Kennedy. They were entitled, JFK: The Ruby Connection, and Did the Mob Kill JFK? I and my partner John Kelin run a web site that posts news and reviews and articles on the assassinations of the sixties. It is called Probe Magazine and it is located at ctka.net. Last year, we ran several critiques of your agenda driven program entitled JFK: Inside the Target Car. These were written by people with high reputations in the field e.g. Milicent Cranor and Dr. David Mantik. They are still online and I advise you to read them.

When you first broadcast that dubious show, we advised our readers to contact the production entity responsible called Creative Differences. We also advised readers to e mail your Viewer Relations page. It appears that made no difference to anyone involved. Because this year, you stuck with Creative Differences and they gave us the equally one-sided and deceptive JFK: The Ruby Connection. It's one thing to have differences of opinion over issues which are relatively open to discussion and over which reasonable people can differ. But its quite another to actually alter the record or to omit crucial facts to make a pre-conceived "recreation" work. We have proved that the latter is the case with these programs. If you don't believe me, just read the essays and then watch the programs. When you do things like reposition Jackie Kennedy in the limousine during the assassination, or eliminate Capt. Will Fritz dashing out in front of Oswald in the Dallas Police basement right before he is shot, that is falsifying the record.

Some people take the assassination of President Kennedy seriously, both as a historical event and marker. Therefore we don't appreciate these types of alterations of the record over important points. Further, you may not be aware that, since 1998, Congress has made available about two million pages of declassified documents on President Kennedy's assassination. Most informed observers believe that they alter the calculus of the case. Writers like Gary Aguilar, David Mantik, Milicent Cranor, John Newman, Jim Douglass, Lisa Pease, and others have written valuable works made possible by these records. In the face of that, why you would continue to adulterate facts and mislead the public with programs like you are presenting, is a mystery. One which I think we deserve an answer to. But another way to put it is this: Better that you don't produce programs on the subject at all than ones like these.

It's not like other people are not doing better and more honest programs on the subject. They are. At the time you were putting the above two programs on the air, National Geographic Channel presented an interesting, valuable, and honest program called The Lost JFK Tapes. After you read the above critiques, you should watch it just to see the difference.

Why you can't do something similar puzzles many of us. And why you persist with allying yourself with Creative Differences, The Sixth Floor and Gary Mack on the matter of President Kennedy's murder is just as inexplicable.

Sincerely,

James DiEugenio

Dear Mr. Erickson:

Last year I sent you a copy of some of the reviews we did on a program produced by you for Discovery Channel entitled JFK: Inside the Target Car. Those reviews seriously questioned the methodology that Creative Differences used in making that highly dubious show. I hoped that this battery of critiques by knowledgeable people e.g. Milicent Cranor and David Mantik, would have been enough to alert you.

It was not. This year you repeated your performance with JFK: The Ruby Connection. I did a three-part critique of this one at the web site ctka.net. The last part is a direct rebuttal to Gary Mack's reply to another critique by Pat Speer. I again showed that-in three ways-- you made a false reconstruction in order to make your conclusion functional. I also noted many other sins of commission and omission.

So far in these reviews, I have focused on Gary Mack/Larry Dunkel as the point man. I did this on the grounds that he is the allegedly knowledgeable partner in these enterprises. But since you actually played a large part in this one, and you also were warned last year, I cannot really do that anymore. I mean what's next: another horrible one-sided show on the Tippit murder? Or maybe JFK and Vietnam with John McAdams as the talking head? With the direction you are headed in, I really don't know what the future holds.

But before all that, I would like to request that we meet. We both live in the LA area and I am on vacation for the next two weeks. I would like to find out just where you are on the JFK case. Are you aware of what is happening or is Gary Mack the maestro? Do you even care? You can call me at ______________ or e-mail me at ______________.

If we do not meet, then I will take that as an admission of the worst and will write in kind about it in the future.

Sincerely,

Jim DiEugenio

If you wish, you may use the following suggested text in your communication:

There have been two million pages of documents declassified on the JFK case since 1998. You appear to be unfamiliar with most of them.

Gary Mack and The Sixth Floor Museum seem unwilling to use them or show them to the public. This is a grave disservice to the American people, and I believe it undermines the search for truth in the Kennedy assassination. It also calls into serious question the credibility of Mr. Mack and the Sixth Floor Museum.

Please refer to any of the reviews of the program written by David Mantik, Milicent Cranor or Jim DiEugenio. These reviews (available at www.ctka.net) expose the program's deficiencies, and strongly suggest that the producers of JFK: Inside the Target Car were not interested in the scientific method or an honest depiction of what happened in Dealey Plaza in November 1963. Perhaps in future programs, you will use some of the information presented in any of these reviews.
