| From the July-August, 1996 issue (Vol. 3 No. 5) |
Here we go again. The FBI is now not only the sole agency to appeal ARRB decisions to the president, it has appealed three times. Has the Bureau become the stalking horse for other agencies to test Clintons resolve on the JFK Act? Or has long awaited delaying action begun as the Review Board approaches its last year of existence? Something seems to be afoot in Washington and it may complement the current dispute between the White House and Louis Freeh over the secret file release that is now making headlines in the press. We advise our readers on the current flap, other ARRB news, and issue an Action Alert for you (see page 4).
Bob Tanenbaums new fictionalized account of his experience with the HSCA has become a big hit. There are one million paperback copies now in print. Bob was kind enough to grant Probe an interview about his book. We excerpt segments of that interview in this issue, and we offer the entire wide-ranging discussion for sale in our catalog. Lisa Pease picks up on one strand hinted at in Tanenbaums book, with her exploration of the career and crises of the late Senator Thomas Dodd and the possible effect of his downfall on his son Chris, who worked with Tanenbaum on the House Select Committee. Lisa, who broke new ground with her two part investigation of Freeport Sulphur, breaks new ground here again.
Speaking of new discoveries, Professor Donald Gibson completes his article on the formation of the Warren Commission in this issue. Here he shows the relations between its members and the so-called Eastern Establishment, thought by many to be the real ruling class in this country. Carol Hewett outlines much new information on John Thomas Masen, a suspect who merits suspicion, and since hes still alive, an interview by the Review Board. The sooner, the better. We are happy to publish another installment of a much anticipated work-in-progress on the Paines. In this part, the authorsCarol, Steve Jones, Barbara LaMonicachronicle the career of Ruth Paine after the assassination, in Nicaragua during and after the CIA backed Contra war that toppled the Sandinistas. Ruth is also still alive and should merit an interview, which amazingly, the HSCA did not find necessary to do with her. In our Notebook section we update some stories we have noted in the past, namely, Chris Matthews recent book, our warning about censoring the Internet, and the current state of Operation Mockingbird. It's nice to stay current on these important issues and inform our readers of recent developments with them.
Happily, on page 4, we note a success story. Roger Peterson, has just authored what is probably the best overview of the newly released documents that we know. It is in the current issue of American History. Buy it or peruse it at the library. It is important in its own right, but also, since Roger initiated it himself, it exhibits the kind of activism that Probe feels is needed. Good show Roger.
